#20 – My week in illustrations

When I started thinking about this weeks illustration, I was a bit empty. Or better said, I was judging the ideas that were popping up in my head quickly… ‘can’t do anything to do with autumn again, because I have already done that twice’… things like that. I guess I always feel I want to make something beautiful ánd it has to be meaningful too… but why? I decided myself to do this weekly illustration thing, nobody told me I have to do this, so why would I make it difficult for myself? It was the idea that I would draw every week, learn new skills, have time to experiment, things like that. But I guess uploading the illustration every week means some kind of pressure for me, or something like that.

A quote I heard a few weeks popped into my head ‘Perfection kills joy’. I had lost my joy in making this weekly illustration, because I wanted it to be perfect. So I decided to draw that. I did some quick sketches and then thought it would be cool to use my masking fluid again and improve my skills with that. I just started drawing flowers around the word joy, because for me flowers and joy are the same things. I started liking my drawing more and more as I added more and more flowers. Which led to a funny thing…. I actually thought the drawing I was making was looking pretty good… actually, it might just be almost perfect…But that perfection led to new doubt, because what if I will fuck up now? I liked the drawing so much, it scared me a bit to add colour to it, because what if I ruined it? And what medium should I use, ecoline, water colour or markers. I actually thought long about it, before actually doing something. I ended up scanning the black and white drawing first, before adding the water colour to the flowers. It was still fun to finish this illustration, but I was working more careful then I would have done when I did not like the drawing that much. So perfection is a strange thing :) Still love this illustration btw, so perfection also gave beauty this week.
